The VPK-3927 Volk (wolf) light utility vehicle is designed and manufactured by VPK, a division of the GAZ group that specializes in military vehicles. It is a much improved version of the well-known GAZ Tigr (tiger). The Volk was first revealed at the International Forum Engineering Technologies 2010, and three models have been trialed by Russian forces since. It hasn’t been accepted into service yet, but might help supplement the Tigr in the near future.

These armoured vehicles are designed for transportation of troops and equipment, counter-terrorism missions, and reconnaissance.

The VPK-3927 Volk has a rather simple and effective modular design with several types of interchangeable bodies. The Volk is substantially heavier than its older sibling. Unarmored version weights 7 000 kg, and armored weights 7 500 kg. The payload is ranging from 1 500 kg to 2 500 kg, depending on the version. With its rather boxy design, the VPK-3927 can be tailored to suit various requirements. These include the basic models, all the way up to the 6x6 VPK-39273 built for more flexibility and larger capacity. The standard models accommodate at least 8 people and their gear, with the larger models having the ability to accommodate more troops. Vehicle can also tow trailers and light artillery pieces.

Optional weapon systems range from 7.62-mm and 12.7-mm machine guns, to heavier 30-mm automatic grenade launchers, ATGM systems, and even mortars.

The armoured versions of the vehicle provide protection from 7.62x51 mm armor-piercing rounds, and mine blasts equivalent to 8 kg of TNT. It is also said to include a spall liner for extra protection.

All Volk models are powered by the recently developed YaMZ-5347-20 4.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine. This engine is produced 240 hp, which gets the Volk to a top speed of 120 km/h. There is also a version of this engine, producing a maximum of 300 hp. The chassis and most other components are supplied form the GAZ Tigr. Which in turn uses parts from both the BTR-80 APC and GAZ Vodnik light utility vehicle. This sharing of parts allows for easier and cheaper part replacement, and also allows mechanics who work on those vehicles to work on the Volk. The VPK-3937 uses an independent hydro-pneumatic suspension system with height adjustment ability. It can change the ground clearance from a minimum of 250 mm, to a maximum of 500 mm. The minimal clearance allows to camouflage the vehicle in rugged terrain. The maximum clearance improves cross-country mobility. The vehicle is also equipped with an engine pre-heater, tire inflation system, and permanent all-wheel-drive system. All of these features are also found on the GAZ Tigr, from which the Volk is based.
