The Mercedes-Benz Vario is a commercial van, modified to suit military needs. It is a successor to the second generation MB T2, which was introduced in 1986. Vehicle has been fitted with all-wheel drive system in order to increase it's cross-country mobility. Production of the militarized Vario commenced in 1998. This vehicle is still in production and is offered for sale. It is currently in service with German, Chile, Netherlands, Norway and some other countries.
The Vario is available with two wheelbase lengths. A short wheelbase version has been produced but it's production has now ceased. Vehicle has a payload capacity ranging from 2.5 to 4.2 t, depending on the model. A load area can be configured as a pick-up. In this configuration this military vehicle can be used to carry troops and cargo. The cargo area can be covered with bows and tarpaulin. Alternatively the Vario can be fitted with a box-type body, shelter or tipping body. This militarized vehicle can tow light trailers and artillery pieces, such as mortars.
A semi-forward control cab accommodates driver and two passengers. A larger crew-cab is available as an option. The Vario is also available as a minibus.
The Vario is powered by 4.25-liter Mercedes-Benz turbocharged diesel engine, developing 129 or 177 hp, depending on the model. This light military vehicle has 4x4 configuration. Cross-country mobility of the Vario is modest due to it's commercial nature.
Other light commercial vehicles modified by Mercedes-Benz to suit military needs and offered for sale on the export market are Sprinter and Vito.
