The Amarok M (Military) light multi-purpose vehicle was jointly developed by Volskwagen and Rheinmetall. Basically it is a commercial off-the-shelf VW Amarok pickup truck, modified by Rheinmetall to suit military needs. This vehicle was developed as a private venture and was first revealed in 2012. The Amarok M was aimed to meet a possible requirement of the German Army. It is also proposed for various export customers.

Ground clearance of the Amarok was increased. Rheinmetall also reinforced vehicle's suspension. It is also fitted with heavy-duty tyres. Interior was also modified. Riffle racks, storage bins and radio system were added.

This light utility vehicle is available with single- or double-cab, depending on specific customer requirements. Both of these versions have a loading area at the rear. The cab accommodates driver plus three fully-equipped troops. The Amarok M can perform a wide range of missions. This pickup truck can be configured as patrol vehicle, special operations vehicle, command, communications or utility vehicle.

With a single cab this light multi-purpose vehicle can carry up to 1.37 t of cargo. The double-cab version has a maximum payload capacity of 1.26 t. The Amarok M is fitted with a tow bar and can tow a trailer or light artillery pieces with a maximum weight of up to 2.76 t.

The Amarok M can be armed with a roof-mounted 7.62-mm or 12.7-mm machine gun, or alternatively 40-mm automatic grenade launcher. Roof-mounted weapons are operated from the cargo area.

The Amarok M is available with petrol and turbocharged diesel engines. These engines develop 120 to 180 hp depending on the configuration. Engine is coupled to 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. Vehicle has a full-time all wheel drive. Maximum road speed with the most powerful engine is up to 175 km/h.
