The L-ATV or Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle was developed by Oshkosh Corporation as a private venture to compete for the US military Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) requirement. This new programme is aimed to replace part of the ageing fleet of HMMWV light utility vehicles in service with the US Army and US Marine Corps. Development of the Oshkosh L-ATV commenced in 2006 and it was revealed in 2011. Oshkosh Corporation received a contract to deliver 22 prototype L-ATVs for the testing and evaluation phase of the JLTV programme.

The L-ATV light protected vehicle was specially designed with patrol and combat missions in mind. It is a lighter, smaller, nimbler vehicle than the current M-ATVMRAP, which is currently used by the US troops. The L-ATV is much more survivable than the HMMWV. This vehicle can accept multiple armor configurations. It can be easily adapted to changing operational requirements. Developers claim that this light tactical vehicle provides protection comparable to MRAP vehicles and withstands underbelly blasts.

Currently some versions are available, a two-seat cargo vehicle and a four-seat utility vehicle. The Oshkosh L-ATV is capable of carrying 4-6 troops including the driver, depending on the version. This protected vehicle can be tailored to suit many needs. It can carry standard communication shelters and so on.

The baseline L-ATV carries no weapons. However vehicle can be armed with a roof-mounted 7.62-mm or 12.7-mm machine gun, or 40-mm automatic grenade launcher. Alternatively it can be fitted with a remotely controlled weapon station. In this case weapons are operated remotely under armor. The L-ATV can be also used as a platform to carry anti-tank or anti-aircraft weapons.

This light protected vehicle is powered by a turbocharged diesel engine. The L-ATV can be also fitted with a hybrid diesel-electric engine for greater fuel economy. Also it has capacity to export electricity. This engine is proposed as an option. Vehicle uses Oshkosh intelligent independent suspension system for faster off-road speeds. The Oshkosh L-ATV can be airlifted by a CH-47 Chinook helicopter or C-130 Hercules tactical cargo aircraft.
