The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle, however it's militarized models are being proposed for military customers. The Sprinter is a very successful commercial design, produced since 1995. It's militarized all-wheel drive version is available since 2007. This light vehicle is in service with Germany, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, and possibly some other countries. It is currently in production and is offered for sale.
The militarized version of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is basically a base trim level civilian vehicle, fitted with all-wheel drive system and painted in military flat paint. Various wheelbase lengths are available. The Sprinter is available with numerous types of cabs and bodies. These include a double crew cab, minibus, van with a box body, flatbed troop/cargo carrier. Vehicle can be also fitted with specialized platforms or equipment. The MB Sprinter has a payload capacity, ranging from 1 000 to 2 700 kg, depending on the version. Vehicle can also tow light trailers or artillery pieces.
This light vehicle is powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM 646 DELA 2.1-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 109, 129, or 150 hp. There is also a 3-liter turbocharged diesel, developing 184 hp. It seems that other engine options are also available. Engine is mounted in the front and is mated with a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission.
The militarized Sprinter with 4x4 configuration, however it's cross-country mobility is limited due to it's commercial nature. It's axles have been raised to increase ground clearance. This vehicle is usually used on hard surface roads. Also it is suitable for operation over damaged roads, tracks, or snow.
Other light commercial vehicles modified by Mercedes-Benz to suit military needs and offered for sale on the export market are Vario and Vito.
