The Oshkosh Special Purpose All-Terrain Vehicle or S-ATV was developed to meet a US Special Operations Command's requirement for a ground mobility vehicle. It is also aimed at possible export customers. The S-ATV was revealed in 2012. This lightweight vehicle was developed for reconnaissance and other specialized missions, such as counter-insurgency operations and long-range surveillance. It's production might commence in 2013.
The Oshkosh S-ATV can be fitted with add-on armor kit, which provides some degree of protection against direct fire, artillery shell splinters, landmines and IED blasts. Production vehicles will be available with various levels of integrated protection.
This military vehicle has integrated mounts for various weapons, such as 12.7-mm machine gun or 40-mm automatic grenade launcher.
The Oshkosh S-ATV accommodates 2 to 7 passengers, depending on the version and particular mission requirements. Driver is seated in the middle.
The Oshkosh S-ATV is powered by an unspecified diesel engine. It is speculated that it develops between 225 and 300 hp, depending on the version. Engine is coupled with an automatic transmission. This military vehicle can travel at high speed and has good cross-country mobility over rough terrain. It is claimed that the top speed of the S-ATV is over 120 km/h. A central tyre inflation system is proposed as an option. Height of the vehicle can be reduced for transportation. The S-ATV can be carried by a CH-47 Chinook helicopter both externally and internally.
